*DESIDERATA  (Dan Hansen, FALL 2012)  $30C

EVERGREEN, 34" SCAPES, MID-SEASON, RE-BLOOMS, 5.25" FLOWERS, 6 WAY BRANCHING, 25 BUD COUNT, FERTILE BOTH WAYS! Latin for "desired things", DESIDERATA is the beginning of many things I like to see in a flower.  I remember being in the Kinnebrew's garden years ago and I saw a purple flower with an orange edge. I loved the combination and waited for it to be introduced, yet it never was. To this day, the image of that orange edge still remains burnt into my mind.  In this wonderful cultivar the orange throat bursts into the fuchsia rose of the petals and adds a bit of ribbing to them. The edge of the petals is thick, ruffled, and trimmed graciously; beginning the long journey to orange edges!!!  Great scapes, good bud count and unusual color is what I love to have in a flower and this one has it all!  The poem which inspired the name of this daylily is located below, I hope it speaks to you as much as it does to me.

(PARTING THE RED SEA  X  seedling #8BF)

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly,  and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy

EVERGREEN, 36" SCAPES, EARLY EARLY SEASON, RE-BLOOMS, 5.25" FLOWERS, 5 WAY BRANCHING, 25 BUD COUNT, FERTILE BOTH WAYS!

Coming from the Latin word gēnomos which literally means "earth-dweller", gnomes are thought to live underground and guard precious treasures there.  Folklore has it that the sun's rays will turn gnomes into stone and so the gnomes avoid this by spending the daytime as toads. Gnomes also have fabled powers which allow them to do many things, such as find injured or dying animals for which they feel they are responsible for, because of their love for nature and animals, all the creatures of the forest are friends of the gnome.  In flower form, almond petaloids keep parallel the subterranean colors of the earth and a green yellow throat allows the GUARDING GNOMES to see everything going on in the garden with it's mystical eye of cerise, lavender, white, and blue.
